Course Overview

This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify workplace hazards, conduct hazard assessments, and select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce employee exposure to workplace risks. Participants will learn the principles of hazard recognition, risk evaluation, PPE selection criteria, regulatory requirements, employee training responsibilities, equipment limitations, and maintenance procedures.

The course is designed to support workplace injury prevention and compliance with applicable occupational safety and health requirements.

This Personal Protective Equipment and Hazard Assessment course prepares workers and supervisors to conduct compliant hazard assessments and select appropriate PPE under 29 CFR 1910.132. Participants learn to identify workplace hazards including impact, penetration, compression, chemical, heat, harmful dust, light radiation, and electrical exposures, and to document findings in the written hazard certification required by OSHA. The course covers the hierarchy of controls, emphasizing that PPE is the last line of defense after elimination, substitution, engineering, and administrative controls have been considered. Learners review selection criteria for eye and face protection (ANSI Z87.1), head protection (ANSI Z89.1), foot protection (ASTM F2413), hand protection (ANSI/ISEA 105 and 138), and body protection based on the specific hazards identified. The program explains proper fit, inspection, use, maintenance, cleaning, storage, and replacement of each PPE category, and addresses employer duties for providing PPE at no cost to employees under 29 CFR 1910.132(h). Participants practice conducting a walk-through hazard assessment, completing the written certification with date, workplace evaluated, and the person certifying, and developing employee training that meets OSHA four performance requirements: when PPE is necessary, what PPE is necessary, how to properly don and doff, and limitations and care. The course also covers retraining triggers, documentation retention, and integration with other OSHA standards including respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and fall protection. Upon completion, participants can lead PPE programs that withstand OSHA inspection and protect workers from residual hazards. The program also covers how to write a concise PPE policy, how to train temporary and contract workers, and how to coordinate PPE decisions with industrial hygiene sampling results and annual program reviews.
